Thomas Gatward was born in Therfield, Hertfordshire in the early part of 1848. His father, William Gatward, 30, was an agricultural labourer and his mother was Elizabeth Gatward,26,  nee Nunn, both from Therfield. When he was born Thomas had two older siblings, Emma ,4 and George ,2. 
Thomas was christened at Therfield on 16th July 1848.
In 1850, Thomas's younger brother Henry was born and in 1851 the census shows the family living in Therfield at an area known as 'Roadside', which we believe were permanent roadside settlements. Thomas's father William was 33, his mother Elizabeth, 29, sister Emma, 7 is a scholar and his other siblings were George, 5 and Henry 6 months old.

In 1853, when Thomas was 6, his younger brother James was born.

In 1861 Thomas, now 14,  and his family lived at Hay Green, Therfield. His father William is listed as a labourer, probably agricultural. 
Thomas lived with his parents and siblings George, 16, Henry, 12 and James, 8. All the family except James are listed as labourers so they probably helped on the local farms too. His elder sister Emma, was lodging with the Wood family as a House Servant in nearby Dane End. She would later marry Robert Wood, a relative and neighbour of the Wood family .

In 1871, Thomas, now 23 still lived with his parents at Church Lane, Therfield. His father William and brother James, 18 were both agricultural labourers, whilst Thomas was a bricklayers labourer. His brother Henry had married Martha Pinch and was living in Hauxton, Cambridgeshire as a Copralite Miner with Martha, her mother Hannah and their son William, 6 monthsd old.

The couple remained in Therfield living at Boatmans Cottages in 1891. Thomas, 43, was an agricultural labourer and lived with his wife, Julia, 40 and their children Emily, 11, Elizabeth, 9, Winifred, 6, Henry, 5 and Walter, 2.

In 1901 the family had moved to Dane End , Therfield. Thomas, now 53 was still an agricultural labourer. He lived with his wife , Julia, 49 and children Winifred, 16, a general domestic servant,  Henry, 15, an agricultural labourer, Walter, 11, and Charles,9, .

In 1911 the couple still lived at Dane End in Royston. Only two sons now remained at home, Henry, 24, who like his father was a farm labourer and Charlie (Charles), 19 who was a Bricklayers Labourer.

Thomas then lost 3 of his sons during World War One, with Walter being killed at Ypres in 1916, Charles also at Ypres in 1917 and Henry in 1917 in Palestine.

Thomas passed away age 77 at Royston, Hertfordshire in December 1927, with his death registered in Jan 1928.
