We are not sure whether John  Taylor was born as John Gray as there was a name change , making it difficult to trace Johns early years. The information below is what we do know about John.
John Taylor was born in Edmonton, Essex in 1884. His parents were Charles and Alice Taylor (nee Smith). He had three older brothers, Frederick, born in 1879 , Henry born in 1880,both born in West Ham and Charles born in 1883 in Walthamstow.
We know that in1884 the family moved to Nottingham. According to the birth certificate his sister Emily (Emmeline) was born in a van opposite Goodhead Street in November 1884 which indicates the family may have been connected with travellers/gypsies. This also indicates that John must have been born in the very early part of 1884.
On 19th February 1891, Johns father Charles died in Nottingham.

Johns brother, George William Taylor was born at St Philips, Nottingham in July 1892. We believe his father was Moses M A Kadar, a general practioner in Nottingham, orginally from the West Indies.
Between 1892 and 1895 we know the family moved to Norton Canes in Staffordshire.
In 1895, his mother, Alice had another child, Lucy at Norton Canes. We are unsure of who her father was at present.
Unfortunately, we havn't been able to determine any further information about John yet.
