This may be a transcription error but its not uncommon to find people being ‘general’ about their year of birth .

We think this is the 1891 census for Edward & Elizabeth which shows her mother may have married a man called Thomas Jones, leading us to believe that the transcript of the first marriage certificate may be Jones not James.

We know that life in South Wales was extremely tough at the turn of the century.
The extracts below are taken from http://www.workhouses.org.uk/MerthyrTydfil/ and briefly explain a little about how life was like in Merthyr Tydfil from 1870's to early 1900's.

1901

We believe that below are Edwards records from Brecon prison registry where he served 14 days for a debt in October 1901 and another 14 days in June 1903. It is hard to imagine the consequences in those times of just trying to make ends meet and feeding the family . The equivalent sum with inflation today would have been like owing just over £100 - a sum that no one could imagine serving 2 weeks in prison for nowadays.
