In 1881, John , 23  was working as a Haulier and was a boarder with the Henessy family at Mountain Row, which we think was in Llanover, Monmouthshire.
On 29th August 1886, John married Ellen Connor at St Marys Catholic Church in Merthyr Tydfil. Ellen was Irish, having been born in Cork, Ireland.
Their first child, a daughter, Bridget Mary was born in Summer of 1887.
Son, William Benedict was born in Spring 1889.
Son James was born about 28th March 1891, 8 days prior to the 1891 census. He was christened on 3rd May at St Marys Catholic Church, Merthyr Tydfil.
In 1891, John, 33 and his family lived at 18 Upper Taff Street, Merthyr. He was a hitcher at the colliery. (A hitcher is the person who is responsible for loading and unloading drams and men onto/off the cage at pit bottom and also signalling that the cage is ready to be moved.) His age is a couple of years out in this census but this is common. He lived with his wife, Ellen, and children Bridget, 4, William, 2 and newly born James, 8 days old. We believe the Connors below are Ellens parents and family.
The couples fourth child, John was born in 1893 in Merthyr Tydfil.
John and Ellens fifth child, Ellen was born in late 1895. Sadly, she died before she was 1 in the following Summer in 1896.
Sadly, their son James passed away on 3rd December 1897 at Graig Houses, Abercanaid, Glamorgan, Wales.
Their sixth child, Maurice Patrick was born on 20th July 1897 in Merthyr.
Daughter Catherine was born on 17th April 1900 in Merthyr.
In 1901, John, 43 still lived with his family at 18 Upper Taff Street, Merthyr Tydfil. He was a coal hewer. He lived with his wife, Ellen and children Bridget, 13, William, 11, John, 8, Maurice,3 and Catherine, almost 1. His brother , James was also living with the family and was also a coal hewer.
John and Ellens final child, Edward was born on 22nd August 1903 in Merthyr.
In 1911, John had continued to live at 18, Upper Taff Street, Merthyr. He was an underground hitcher at the colliery. He lived with his wife Ellen, daughter Bridget, 23, who had recently that year married John O'Leary, sons William, 21 and John 18, both colliers but out of work at that time, Maurice , 13,  and daughter Catherine (Katie) , 10.  Also at the home were his neice, Ellen Kate Smith, 3 and his nephew , Laurence Connor, 7 and his sister (in -law we think) Elizabeth Smith. We confirm from the census the deaths of two of their children, James and Ellen.
In 1918, Johns son William was killed in France serving with the Royal Welsh Fucheliers.
In Autumn 1920, Johns daughter Catherine married Levi Rees in Merthyr Tydfil.
We believe this is the record of death for John in 1926. His date of birth is a little out but this was not unusual around those times.
